6 + 1 Writing Fun

45 minutes of fun-filled educational programming that promises to get your students excited about writing.

Age Range: K-6

6+1 Writing Fun is an upbeat "LIVE ACTION" language arts elementary school assembly program. 6+1 Writing Fun is designed to keep children entertained and engaged while learning at the same time.

Students from Kindergarten though 6th grade are exposed to all of the 6+1 Writing Traits:

  • Ideas
  • Organization
  • Voice
  • Word Choice
  • Sentence Fluency
  • Conventions
  • Presentation

Students experience all of the 6+1 writing traits in this program with interactive examples of how the traits apply to their own compositions.

The 6+1 Writing Fun show is an ACTIVE learning experience; each presentation requires audience interaction and participation. Students learn the 6+1 traits of writing by seeing, hearing, and DOING!

The 6+1 Writing Fun program presentation mixes kid friendly, comedy and music to enhance the learning experience.  Students learn the traits visually with colorful props; audibly with fun song and rhyme; and interactively with participative examples and audience interaction. Testimonials

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.  I am recommending this show to other area schools.  It was right on target, communicated in the students' language and music and he even had usually "bored" 6th graders involved!

Jim was a GREAT performer. He kept all the kids actively engaged and really knew his material well. The teachers and our principal thought the show was great success. Jim's pet bird was also a great final addition to the show.  The material in the assembly was very helpful and informative. We would definitely use your company and Jim again.

Jim did a very nice job engaging students in the learning process while focusing on 6+1 Traits of Writing. He was energetic and able to maintain the attention of students in grades 1st grade through 5th for 50 minutes..which isn't an easy thing to do!! Students enjoyed volunteering in his skits and especially enjoyed seeing his BFF Toby!!:) We were all very pleased with his show!

Jim's performane was fantastic!  He entertained all the kids (and teachers and parents) while teaching them writing skills.  He kept them riveted, even though he was here with the same performane last spring.  Toby did a great job, too.

Sean was great! He was funny and engaging. The students loved his humor and learned more about the 6 traits at the same time. The way he described the use of "spicy" words for writing. Our teachers have been introducing each trait slowly to our students. So, this assembly was right on time!

Jim presented a nice show.  He was entertaining to the adults and presented curriculum-appropriate writing themes.  I was wondering how he would pull off a WRITING presentation for a K-6 audience, but he not only did so, he did it effectively well.  Jim had a good mix of "hooks" throughout the program to keep the students entertained, while he also integrated Write Traits components.  My teachers stated it ranked up there with the top shows we've had ..and this was an core academic theme--excellent!

I am not a teacher at Red Apple but had an opportunity to attend the 6 + 1 Writing Fun assembly there on Thursday, September 9, 2010. Jim Mitchell is outstanding.  Jim puts a lot of energy into the show and  presents a lot of practical material in a fun way.  He held the attention of the entire audience.  The kids had a great time and came away with tools they can use in their own writing.  I would highy recommend this show.

Jim was outstanding. He knew the material well which is an important factor - but his high energy delivery was amazing.  He kept the kids engaged throughout the show - and had a wonderful way with the children's varied answers - very positive - very upbeat - very informative. The ending was just astounding - the kids gasped in disbelief at what they accomplished together.

I cannot remember ever having more enthusiasm expressed by both students and faculty for an educational show.  Everybody loved it.  The teachers will be referring to it often to remind the students to use the writing traits.  The fourth graders were eager to get back to their creative writing in the afternoon.  One boy commented, "I know.  I get it now.  I have lots more ideas.  I will use them."  I highly recommend it and have sent emails to fellow librarians already.

This was a wonderful program which was entertaining and academically enriching.  Our students and staff were inspired and left enthusiastically seeking a chance to put the writing skills into practice.  One 5th grade student told me after the program, "I thought a writing assembly would be boring, but this was so much fun!"  I was especially impressed that the presentation was relevant to students from 1st to 5th grades.  I have already recommended the 6+1 Writing assembly to another school in our district.

As we are just implementing these materials within our language arts instruction, the program gave wonderful visual references and images of the traits and their importance to great writing. Everyone though the program was excellent. The teachers learned quite a bit... one even said she learned she wasn't teaching the kids to think the whole process through-- now she knows how to bring the lessons through to the kids. They only wished we had shown it in the beginning of the year, not when the year was almost over-- well worth the cost!

I thought this program, and the presenter, was especially entertaining. I was initially skeptical when told the students would be attending an assembly about writing. However, the presenter and the content was surprisingly fun while simultaneously being informative. The content was especially useful because he showed the students how to make writing fun. Many students are daunted when they attempt to put pen to paper, yet he showed them when you break it down into steps- it is not so hard to do!!

Before the convo, I thought 'how could a 45 min. writing lesson be fun'???It was awesome from the first minute to the last. Our 1-3rd graders loved it. We went back to our room and wrote about Our Pets and used HOT SAUCE WORDS. We typed them on the computer today. I wish it was on tape to show the classes every year. Thanks!!!

For eight years I have been head of the committee that organizes at least 10 guests into our school each year. I have never had such a response from both teachers and students as I did with the 6+1 traits assembly. Jim was full of energy and had the kids laughing throughtout the program. At the same time they were listening and learning. I have heard many teachers make references to some of Jim's thoughts and ideas from the show while they are teaching writing.I highly recommend this program to any school using the 6+1 writing program. Awesome!
